Flash-mob takes over GUC, promotes end to violence against women

Crowds gathered to watch a group of UNA students, faculty and supporters perform in flash-mob in the GUC atrium at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon. The performance, organized by the Center for Women’s Studies and Rape Response, is a part of the One Billion Rising global-movement.

Kassie Stanford, a representative of Rape Response, said that the flash-mob was a way for activists at UNA to raise awareness about statistics which indicate that one in three women in the world will be raped or beaten in their lifetime.

The message of One Billion Rising is to challenge men and women to rise up and non-violently participate in an open protest against violence toward women. Representatives remained in the GUC after the performance to answer questions about the movement.

“It’s an incredible way to organize so many people that are passionate about the same thing on a global scale,” Stanford said.
