After the lead changed between the two teams four times and the score tied four times, the UNA men could not hang on in overtime to seal the victory against West Alabama on Saturday.

North Alabama went into halftime down by six (25-19) with hope for a strong turnaround in the second half after getting in foul trouble, and suffering in the rebounding category as West Alabama was successful in second chance shots.

In the second half, UNA was able to catch some calls in their favor, as well as having several shooters get hot outside the perimeter, including Ricky Davison, who sent UNA into overtime (56-56) by nailing a three-pointer from the wing with seven seconds left on the clock. However, in overtime, UNA was unable to match West Alabama’s points.

“There were several big possessions in the second half when we were down by four,” said Coach Bobby Champagne. “We had two consecutive steals, and transition baskets where several players had options to finish baskets, but were unable to convert, or simply turned it over.”

Champagne said that instead of cutting the lead right when they were able, the Lions were able to extend the lead so they were forced to fight to come back.

“We have guys in foul trouble basically because we have not corrected our defense yet,” said Champagne. “It’s a good league. Every team is really strong and you have to show up every night if you want an opportunity to win.”

Ricky Davison was the leading scorer with 30 points and pulled down five rebounds, while Marcus Landry added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Coach Champagne said he was proud of the men for playing hard and not giving up.

“I cannot fault their effort,” said Champagne. “When they decided they were going to play hard, it happened.”

UNA will host UAH tonight night in Flowers Hall at 8 p.m.
