The UNA women’s basketball Lions are still perfect in conference play (11-0), as they defeated Lambuth 46-42 last Thursday, Feb. 17, and West Alabama 53-43 Saturday, Feb. 19.

Coach Terry Fowler said Saturday was a very emotional day, not just for him, but for his six seniors that were honored at Senior Day. He was very proud of his team’s effort and determination after two big conference victories.

“We just have to play, said Fowler. “We have great effort and made big time plays that champions make. We had players go down and hit the floor all night and that’s what it takes. We just keep fighting until the end.”

Senior Niala Harris was the leading scorer in both games, having 15 points and eight rebounds against Lambuth, and 20 points and six rebounds against West Alabama. She was also one of the seniors honored at the pink zone senior day game.

“It’s always hard to play at Lambuth, but we kept grinding the game out and doing our best to get the win,” said Harris. “Senior Day, our last home game, was a very emotional day, and we just wanted to go out with a bang for us and our fans and let them enjoy our last home game.”

Fowler said he was pleased with the defense (as their defense wins games because they are known for their strong defensive play) and their overall effort of points in the paint. He is looking forward to future games as the Lions continue to shine on the hardwood.

“We played great defense, and just had to make some baskets,” said Fowler (in relation to the Lambuth game). “In the second half, we were able to work the ball inside to Harris and do some great things.”

Harris thinks that UAH will be ready to play as UNA goes to Huntsville on Saturday, but believes that the determined mindsets and will to win of this women’s team will add another victory on the books for the Lions. She is also looking forward to the conference tournament and has big goals for her team.

“In the rest of the season concerning conference play, my goal is to make it past the first round and from there take it game by game and just win,” said Harris. “There’s no reason why we can’t win the championship this year. We have played against great teams, showed them we can compete and have done well. We will just play our game.”
