Catherine Turner: snacks, COVID-19, the Year of the UNA Woman

Lauren Odum, Volunteer Writer

Catherine Turner is a vital part of operations at The Lion’s Corner, a small grab n’go convenience-type storefront in the Guillot University Center.

Odum: Alright, so we’ll start with your name and where you are from?
Turner: I’m Catherine Turner from Florence, Alabama.

Odum: How long have you been working at UNA?
Turner: 12 years

Odum: 12 years, wow! Have you always been working at The Lion’s Corner?
Turner: No, I’ve worked at CREATE and I’ve worked at The Science Center, and I’ve worked at Mane Market.

Odum: Have you enjoyed your time so far?
Turner: Yes!

Odum: That’s great to hear! So what has been most fulfilling about working at UNA?
Turner: I like talking to the students

Odum: I know you get to interact with all sorts of students and faculty that might be walking around The GUC. Do you have any interesting stories about the people you’ve met?
Turner: Not any in particular. They’ll mostly ask me for directions, or tell me their dog passed, or that they’ve made an A on their exam. They’ll tell me short snippets of their life that I enjoy.

Odum: Did that change with COVID? Talking to people face to face?
Turner: So far it’s been the same, especially since I’m so accessible [within the GUC].

Odum: Do you like to cook?
Turner: I am a cook, for sure

Odum: So have you discovered any favorite snacks or any interesting food combinations since you’ve been working here in The Lion’s Corner? The store has a great variety of items.
Turner: Yes! I like Jack and Olive, and I like the muffins, and I like the drinks a lot.

Odum: This is the Year of the UNA Woman, what do you think about the impact women have made in your 12 years of working here on campus?
Turner: [women] have made it more progressive and more accessible for us!
