UNA soccer beats Alabama A&M, remains undefeated

The UNA soccer team defeated Alabama A&M in their second Division I game, 2-1. The Lions are now 2-0 for the season after defeating Alabama State University on Friday 5-1

Sophomore forward Madeline Guillen, with an assist from junior midfielder Shelby Wall, scored a goal giving UNA a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs and held the lead until the second half. A&M managed to tie the game with 13 minutes left and held off the Lions until the five minute mark. Senior forward Kylie Huey, with an assist from Wall, took a shot inside the defensive zone for the Lions to pull ahead. They held the lead for the remaining time, securing the victory.

Head coach Chris Walker said “It was a hot Sunday, but with so much hype from Friday night, it was just a matter of getting out and getting a result. We’ve dealt with some adversity getting through stuff, but we got the result we needed.”

The Lions made 19 shots against A&M with 14 of those on goal, compared to the Bulldog’s five shots with only one on goal and scoring. An aggressive offense is a key tactic for UNA, apparent in both games. However, that playstyle penalized UNA 15 times for offsides calls preventing the team from following through with offensive plays.

Freshman defender Morgan Ebert said “I think we could have done better. We did well winning, we just need to work on distributing and our offsides stuff. Overall, I think we played well together.”
