UNA’s police department will let students meet the police officers keeping them safe this Tuesday.
On Sept. 2, the Meet the Police event, hosted by the Crime Prevention and Community Outreach department of UNAPD, will let students meet campus officers and learn about what they do to support the university.
“This is a great opportunity to build relationships with campus law enforcement, learn more about their role on campus and discuss ways to work together for a safer environment,” reads an informational graphic for the event on the UNA CampusGroups webpage.
The event will start at 7 p.m. and will include a Q&A session as well as opportunities to learn about programming put on by the police department.
Meet the Police won’t be the first program the department has helped put on this semester.
UNAPD officers recently helped put on a self-defense class for students on Aug. 28.
“This class is designed for all students and community members who are interested in learning effective self-defense techniques to help protect themselves in real-life situations,” UNAPD Officer Shequanda Jenkins said.
Officer Jenkins has taught self-defense classes on campus at UNA for the last five years. She said that in her time teaching the classes, she has added different techniques and approaches to improve the lessons.
“It’s important for everybody to have techniques that they can use to protect themselves,” Jenkins, who has been an instructor of the class for the past three years, said.
Jenkins also believes that it is important for people to be aware of their surroundings, as that can help them avoid physical confrontations before they even begin
