Day of service brings community together

The UNA community came together Jan. 15 in the Guillott University Center to help local food pantries for the fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day.

“This is our way of trying to join a national movement of people coming together,” said Assistant Director of Student Engagement Bethany Green. “We’ve had a great turnout.”

Volunteers generated 30,000 meals for the Shoals area this year. The meals will go to the UNA food pantry and other local food pantries, such as Loaves and Fishes and Salvation Army.

Green said volunteers consisted of students, UNA faculty, staff and community members.

The theme for the day was “What are you doing for others?” This was based off one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous quotes.

Senior Jose Figueroa-Cifuentes said the day was a great chance to give back to others.

“It is so awesome to see all of these different people come together for a good cause,” Figueroa-Cifuentes said.
