Peformances bring awareness to violence against women

Students and faculty performed “The Vagina Monologues” at 7 p.m. in the Gulliot University Center’s Performance Center.

The audience reacted with a multitude of emotions to the performances.

The turnout was great, said Coordinator for the Center for Women’s Studies Emily Kelley.

“It was right on par with previous years, and this year we had a great cast,” Kelley said.

Eve Ensler wrote “the Monologues” to bring awareness to violence against women worldwide.

During and after many of the readings, the crowd laughed and applauded in support of the various speakers.

Many of the monologues focused on problems such as rape, women in wartime and self-acceptance.

One monologue commemorated one of Ensler’s friends who lost her life fighting violence against women in Haiti.

“It was empowering,” said freshman Karlee Mauk.

She said she volunteered with the Center for Women’s Studies last semester and decided to see the performance.

Freshman Bryant Hasheider said he went to support his friend who was in “the Monologues” and would encourage others to see it next year.

“It was amazing, great and iconic,” Hasheider said.
