Lions take series on walk-off victories

The UNA baseball team faced West Georgia in a rubber match Saturday, taking a 5-4 victory in the final game of the conference opening series. The Lions are 2-1 in conference play.

Down 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, freshman Conner Kiser blasted a solo shot. Sophomore Kyle Hubbach knocked in two on a home-run to tie the game.

The teams went to extra innings, where freshman Davis Elliott hit a walk-off RBI single to take the game and the series. Senior Dylan Calhoun beat the throw from left field to score the winning run.

UNA remained scoreless the first three innings of the game. Senior right-handed pitcher Riley Sanderson started off on the mound, allowing four runs in seven innings but only one run was earned.

In the first game of the series Feb. 19, the Wolves dominated in a 13-1 win.

Senior Austin Carpenter started off on the mound, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits, but only five were earned. The Lions had three errors and two passed balls. Senior Todd Gibson came in for relief toward the end of the fourth inning and allowed the other two runs.

The Lions could not get anything going offensively in the first game, scoring one run, but did enough to win the second game of the double header.

West Georgia and UNA kept a scoreless tie throughout the first five innings in game two, but a walk-off homerun by Kevin Hall in the seventh inning gave the Lions a 3-2 win.

The Wolves struck first, scoring a run off Gibson. Down 2-0, UNA senior Heath Wood hit a leadoff single and scored the first run, making it 2-1 late in the game. Sophomore pitcher Devan Traglia kept the Wolves from scoring in the seventh, allowing Hall to hit the go-ahead homer for the win in game two.
