Lions extend winning streak to nine games

UNA volleyball is riding a nine-game winning streak and remains undefeated in conference play, defeating the Lee Flames 3-0 Saturday at Flowers Hall.

The Lions (9-2, 3-0 Gulf South Conference) displayed a solid team effort, led by Andrea De Leon with 38 of 40 assists for UNA. Natasha Fomina, Jessica Austin, Peyton Lang and Lexie Bradley combined for 37 kills in the victory.

“We struggled a little bit today, but we pulled through,” said head coach Stephanie Radecki. “Lee is a very good team. Our girls really shined through and became really tough throughout each set, especially when Lee chipped back. We were able to stay focused and execute.”

Defensively, libero Ashtyn Kapovich provided 18 digs for the Lions. UNA finished with 37 total digs.

“We didn’t come out as good as we did yesterday,” Kapovich said. “As the game proceeded on, I think our defense was getting better after coach told us what we were doing wrong.”

Radecki said starting 3-0 in conference play is a momentum builder for her team, as the Lions will play two road games against GSC opponents Union and Christian Brothers next week.

“(Shorter and Lee) were two big wins for us,” Radecki said. “To win at home is even more exciting. The team is playing really well. I’m excited about the things we are doing right now.

“Andrea (De Leon) is doing a great job leading our team, distributing the ball to our hitters and allowing them to be successful.”

The Lions will travel to Union Sept. 25 before swinging by Christian Brothers Sept. 26. UNA’s next home game will be Sept. 29 against West Georgia.
