UNA golf team earns spot in regional

After a slow start to the season, the UNA golf team finished in a flurry, winning or finishing in the top three of its last four tournaments.

The Lions wrapped up the Gulf South Conference tournament in Tunica, Mississippi, finishing third place.

The third place finish was good enough to get UNA an invite to the regionals.

“We’re very excited to be in the regionals,” said head coach Jason Vaughn. “Hopefully we can carry this momentum over and have a good showing.”

The regionals are scheduled to get underway May 4 Tampa, Florida.

“If you look at us this year or in previous years, we tend to start slow and get better as the season goes on,” Vaughn said.

The season started to turn around for the Lions after the Southeastern Collegiate Invitational in March.

“We finished 10th out of 18 teams in the Southeastern Collegiate Invitational,” Vaughn said. “But, Forrest (Knight) won the tournament, and it got things back on the right track for me.”

In their next tournament, the Lions finished third out of seven teams in the UNA Spring Classic.

“It wasn’t a large field,” Vaughn said. “But we were very competitive and I could tell the guys were hungry for a win.”

The Lions tasted victory for the first time all season at The Argonaut Invitational.

The tournament fielded 16 teams and the Lions not only shot the best score in the tournament as a team, but Knight was the overall winner for the second time in the season.

“It felt good to win the Argonaut Tournament,” Knight said. “Winning is a feeling that never gets old.”

Knight was also very pleased with the overall play of the team.

“What made this win special was the fact that we also won it as a team,” Knight said. “We all had something to celebrate.”
