Lions end home stand on a high note

The men’s basketball team found a much-needed win, as the Lions put away Lee University 77-67 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall.

UNA’s three seniors stepped up big in today’s game, as forward Calvin Dade lead the way with 24 points and guard Nathan Spehr added 21. Forward Marcus Landry led the team in rebounding with 13 boards.

Spehr has hit 33 consecutive free throws this season, breaking the school record set by Luther Tiggs at 32. Spehr also holds the school record for highest single-season free throw percentage at 91.2 last season.

“I set goals for myself before the season,” Spehr said. “I wanted the highest free throw percentage in the NCAA and I’m not far behind. I didn’t know about the most consecutive record until before the game, but it’s good to have the record and now I want to put it out of reach.”

UNA has won five of their last six games, bringing its Gulf South Conference record to 8-9. The Lions are currently in eight place in the conference standings.

UNA will now go on a four game road trip before ending the season at home against rival UAH. UNA head coach Bobby Champagne said he’s confident about getting revenge on Mississippi College and Delta State next week if the team continues the hot streak.

“We didn’t play very well against Mississippi College and in the first half against Delta State,” Champagne said. “Obviously it’s going to be a lot tougher on the road, but if we can continue to play with this effort, energy and confidence, we’ll be fine.”
