Local officials still denying marriage licenses, ceremonies

Three same-sex couples complete marriage license applications in the Lauderdale County Probate Judge’s office Feb. 9. Probate Judge James Hall said until he is clear whether state or federal rulings prevail, no licenses will be issued.

Couples hoping to get married during Valentine’s Day week in the Shoals did not get good news from courthouse officials Thursday.

Officials with Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties said  they are still not issuing marriage licenses or performing ceremonies for any couples — heterosexual or same-sex.

Couples may only complete applications for the licenses, authorities said.

Probate office employees from all three counties said they are seeking clarification whether federal or state rulings on same-sex marriages prevail.

A time frame for obtaining clarification has not been identified.
