Women’s basketball team falls to top seed, ends season

The women’s basketball team ended their season Saturday after losing a tough battle to top-seeded Delta State University 68-58 in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

The Lions led 29-25 at halftime and appeared to pull off the upset against the Lady Statesmen, but DSU got hot from the field in the second half to complete the comeback.

“We lost our focus a little bit in the second half,” said head coach Missy Tiber. “We had some breaks that didn’t go our way and they took advantage, which is what good teams do.”

After shooting only 38 percent from the field in the first half, Delta State shot 48 percent after halftime. It didn’t help the cause when the Lions shot only 21 percent in the second half, Tiber said.

“We had a rough second half and it cost (us),” Tiber said. “But our kids continued to fight and gave us a chance to win.”

Junior forward Corinne White led the Lions in scoring with 15 points, which included hitting four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Janae Lyde had 13 points and game-high nine assists.

White made a three-pointer to tie the game at 54-54 with 4:25 remaining, but DSU responded with a three-pointer of their own and took the lead for good.

All-GSC second teamer Nichelle Fillmore, the lone senior for the Lions this season, had six points and five rebounds before fouling out of the game with 6:53 remaining.

UNA defeated Christian Brothers 62-54 in the first round of the tournament, gaining revenge after dropping both games against CBU earlier this year.

The Lions dropped five of their last seven games of the season and finished with a 15-13 record.
