The women’s basketball team beat the University of West Georgia 80-59 after losing a key player to injury in the second half.

Starting guard Lauren Farris was shaken up on the last play of the first half. She tried to continue playing but pulled up holding her knee at half-court on UNA’s first possession of the second half.

“We’ll get an MRI on her in the morning,” said head coach Missy Tiber. “The trainer said it was probably a torn ACL.”

Despite losing Faris, the Lions were able to pull away from the Wolves in the second half by outscoring West Georgia 37-24 after intermission.

Junior forward Corinne White came off the bench to record a double-double while leading all UNA scorers with 18 points. Senior forward Nichelle Filmore also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“Coach (Tiber) said you need to be ready when your number is called,” White said. “And tonight was really key for me to not only score on offense, but also to play defense and rebound.”

The Lions pulled from the bench to gain a total of 33 points from nonstarters.

“We really came together as a team to win it for Lauren,” White said. “I think tonight gave us a lot of confidence.”

The Lions will play at Valdosta State University at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.
