Lions basketball team defeats West Georgia 97-89

UNA brings its season-high winning streak to four games after a 97-89 victory over the University of West Georgia.

The Lions had six players score double figures during the game, with 41 points coming from nonstarters. Senior guard Marquel Darrington led all UNA scorers with 24 points while shooting 11 out of 13 from the charity stripe.

“We’ve been doing a pretty good job of shooting the basketball the past six or seven games and it’s allowed us to shoot better,” said head coach Bobby Champagne.

UNA was able to shoot 52 percent from the field and 33 out of 44 from the free throw line.

“We were doing a good job getting the ball inside,” Champagne said. “We got to the rim and we got to the free throw line.”

West Georgia started the second half on a 10-0 run and evened the game at 59 with 11 minutes and 15 seconds left, but was never able to take the lead.

“We came out sluggish to start the game and also in the second half,” Champagne said.

Forward Bruce Adams came off the bench to record 17 points and seven rebounds. Guard Devin McNeil and forward Jere Vucica came off the bench and scored 12 points each.

“This league is very good league and there are eight teams that could win it,” Champagne said.

The Lions will travel to Valdosta State University on Thursday in the first of two away games this week.
