The men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to the third ranked team in the nation Saturday afternoon as the University of West Florida swept both matches 9-0.

The men started the day with regularly scheduled doubles matches and got off to a great start.

“I thought we competed hard,” said head coach Brice Bishop. “We played a quality team and had our chances, but they did the necessary things to get the job done.”

They took an early 5-2 lead in one match and had a 5-3 lead in another before losing both doubles matches nine games to seven.

The third and final doubles match for the men finished 8-6.

“We’re pretty good in doubles,” Bishop said. “I feel this is the best team in the nation, and we had opportunities to win.”

The Argos withstood the early run by UNA and went on to triumph in singles play.

“Give them credit for the way they battled,” Bishop said. “After their comeback in doubles, we started out flat in singles and it was an uphill battle from there.”

The women played some competitive matches, but could not find a way to get in the winners column either, he said.

“All in all we competed hard, and I’m proud of the way (we) played today,” Bishop said.

The losses Saturday drop the men’s team to 0-3, and the women have fallen to 1-3.

“I’m not worried about our record right now,” Bishop said. “We’re playing quality teams and competing, and if we continue to do that good things will happen.”

With the weather the UNA campus experienced all week, it was difficult for the tennis teams to be able to get on the court and be able to practice like usual, he said.

“Because of the weather, we are getting no court time,” Bishop said. “We have to be able to get on the court.”

The men and women’s teams will travel to play Lemoyne Owen in Memphis, Tenn., Tuesday at 2 p.m.
