Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the visitation and funeral times for Larry Nelson.

Longtime professor and UNA community member Larry Nelson died Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Nelson was diagnosed with grade-IV brain cancer in May 2013, following a CT scan in April that revealed a large tumor on his brain.

The outpour of grief and love for Nelson on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter reveal that he was admired and beloved by many on UNA’s campus during his 29-year career as a history professor.

“A part of the University of North Alabama family since 1985, Dr. Larry Nelson was a great man,” reads an official statement from the university on their Facebook page. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

A visitation service will be held Friday, Jan. 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Faith Church, located at 3601 Florence Blvd. The funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at the same location. All services will be handled by Greenview Funeral Home of Florence.
