UNA fraternity chapter collects coats for local charity

Zack Kimbrough, Avery Dotson and Noel Geiger brave the cold temperatures to collect coats for the Salvation Army. The organization will continue their coat drive through Friday, Jan. 24.

Alpha Tau Omega is currently holding their annual coat drive, called Cold for Coats, on campus in front of Rogers Hall. The drive began Jan. 22 and will run through Jan. 24, starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. daily.

All of the donated coats will go toward the Salvation Army’s homeless shelter, said freshman Alec Prince.

“We haven’t counted them yet, but we have four big bags full of coats,” Prince said. “There is also a whole table full. Safely, we’ve collected dozens of coats so far.”

It is a good thing to reach out and help the community — especially in this weather, Prince said.

“Some people don’t have coats,” Prince said. “When it’s really cold outside, they are suffering. It’s a good thing for everyone to reach out and help the community by giving their old coats.”

Collecting coats gives ATO an opportunity to help others, said freshman Zack Kimbrough.

“We want to give back to the community and to the less fortunate,” Kimbrough said. “It’s freezing outside, and everyone needs to have a coat. Members of Alpha Tau Omega have been standing out here shirtless for a couple of days just to raise awareness.”
