Construction pushes back Commons opening date

Students will have to wait at least a half-month longer for their Chick-fil-A and Starbucks fix, as university officials have reported a new tentative opening date for The Commons.

Instead of opening Feb. 1 as announced at the December Board of Trustees meeting, a more reasonable expectation is Monday, Feb. 17, said Lee Handley, the university’s project manager for the building’s construction.

“Feb. 17 is the anticipated date opening,” he said. “That is, of course, barring any more bad weather. We’re up against the wall to make it as planned already.”

There are many things that could happen to delay the building’s opening further, said Sodexo Manager Alan Kinkead.

“(The Feb. 1 opening date) hasn’t been the case for quite some time,” he said. “My understanding is that Chick-fil-A and Starbucks will be opening Feb. 17, but there are so many things that can happen (to delay the opening).”

In addition to delays that could potentially occur because of weather or construction circumstances, pieces of essential equipment for both eateries have not yet arrived, Kinkead said.

Earlier university reports confirmed the opening of the building to be Feb. 1, with departments and offices moving in at the end of January.
