UNA football wins GSC championship

The Lions football team arrived at Flowers Hall as Gulf South Conference champions at 8:36 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 9.

UNA claimed their first conference championship since 2009 with a 55-28 win over conference newcomer Florida Tech in Melbourne Field on Nov. 9.

UNA has now won at least a share of the conference crown when they finished 5-1 in the conference.

The University of West Alabama defeated Shorter University 63-17 on Nov. 9 in Livingston, Ala. to win their share of the GSC championship with a 5-1 GSC record. Delta State University is currently 4-1 in the conference and will play the University of West Georgia for their share of the GSC championship on Nov. 14. No matter who wins the DSU/UWG game, UNA and UWA have won shares of the 2013 GSC Championship.

UNA opened the Florida Tech game with a six play 66 yard drive that was capped off by a 31 yard touchdown run by Lamonte Thompson.

Nick Williams intercepted a pass on the Panthers first possession and Thompson found pay dirt again, this time from 19 yards out.

Florida Tech answered with a touchdown, when Bobby Vega completed a pass to Aaron George from 31 yards out.

The Lions continued to score consistently on their next three possessions to open up a 34-14 halftime lead.

Florida Tech never got closer than 13 in the second half as UNA went on to roll to a 55-28 victory.

Florida Tech outgained the lions 471-451, but the UNA defense intercepted five passes and recovered two fumbles to end seven of the Panthers drives.

The victory gives head coach Bobby Wallace his fourth GSC championship at UNA.

The Lions now turn their attention to non-conference opponent Tarleton State to close out of the regular season.
