UNA women’s basketball starts season with win

The Missy Tiber era of UNA women’s basketball got off to a fast start with the Lions defeating Tennessee Temple University 74-44 on Nov. 12.

UNA’s defense caused 34 turnovers and generated 21 steals en route to the victory.

“I thought we played hard and were very aggressive as the game went on,”  said head coach Missy Tiber said.

The Lady Lions had three players score in double figures, with Jennifer Townes leading the way with an 18 point, eight rebound effort.

Lauren Farris scored 16 points and recorded nine steals, while Nichelle Fillmore chipped in with 15 points.

“We were a little passive early,” Tiber said.  “But that’s just first game jitters.”

After getting out to a 21 point halftime lead, the Lions pulled away to the 30 point win.

The Lions shot 35.8 percent from the field on offense and 15 percent from behind the three point line.

“We’re not taking bad shots,” Tiber said.  “But we can shoot better than we shot tonight.”

UNA will be playing Bellarmine College in Flowers Hall on Sunday Nov. 17.

“I don’t know what to expect without tape, we just gotta play hard,” she said.

The Lions will look to improve on their 35.8 percent shooting effort.

“Its going to be a different ball game on Sunday,” Tiber said.  They’re going to be disciplined, so we have to make shots.”
