UNA golf team wins home tournament

Trent Alexander and Connor Goodsey birdied their last two holes of the day to secure a five stroke victory at the TVA Credit Union Golf Tournament hosted at Turtle Point Country Club in Killen, Ala. on Oct. 22.

“This is our home course, and our guys know it very well,” Head Coach Robert Vaughn said.  “I think we took advantage of that.”

After playing 36 holes on Monday, the tournament format was setup for 18 on Tuesday.

14 schools were competing in the tournament.

After 36 holes of play the Lions held a five-stroke advantage into the final 18.

Columbus State was the only team in striking distance coming into the final round.

“Columbus State is competing hard, and their making some shots trying to win this thing,” Vaughn said early during the second day.

UNA was able to maintain their composure and seal the victory.

“Connor, Matt, and Trent played well down the stretch for us,” Vaughn said.

The Lions had a 54 hole total of 874, which put the team 10 stokes over par for the tourney.

Columbus State finished second, five strokes behind the Lions.

UNA had four individual golfers in the top eight.

Michael Zierdt and Connor Goodsey both finished two over, Trent Alexander was four over and Matt Stephens finished in eighth place five over.

“It feels great to get a win,” Vaughn said.
