Program council plans for step show, other campus events

The University Program Council met to discuss upcoming events that they have for the semester for Oct. and Nov. on Sept. 29.

UPC is planning to host events for Domestic Violence Awareness Week, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the effects of domestic violence, on Oct. 15.

Christian Bayens, UPC Culture and Education Chairman, explains what he plans to do for Domestic Violence Week and how the campus can get involved.

“I want to get RSOs to meet on campus to paint the campus purple since the Domestic Violence Awareness Weeks theme is purple,” Bayens said. “We can use purple ribbons and sidewalk chalk to raise awareness about domestic violence.”

UPC will be hosting “Show Stoppin’ Stepping for United Way” at Norton Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Oct. 22. RSOs will be stepping to music and chanting about United Way. United Way’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good, according to Unitedway.org.

“We have 11 organizations registered for Step Show,” said Service Chairwoman Lesley Carter. “Everything with Step Show is going good so far.”

Students can buy tickets for Step Show at una.edu/boxoffice for $9 or at the door for $10. All proceeds from the event will go to United Way.

UPC hosted a movie night on campus Sept. 20 for students, showing “Monsters University.”

“Overall, the movie night went great,” said Alyson Berry, UPC Movies and Novelties Chairwoman. “From what I’ve heard a lot of people enjoyed it.”

Berry and her committee are planning to host another movie night on campus for students around Halloween time that will feature a Halloween movie.

UPC meets every Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the GUC.
