Thompson’s big night leads UNA past Miles

FLORENCE- Before the 7th largest crowd in UNA football history, the Lions did not disappoint as they defeated Miles College 42-7.

Running back Lamonte Thompson led the way for the UNA offense, carrying the ball 14 times for 189 yards. He had two touchdowns with one being from 69 yards out.

Quarterback Luke Wingo had just over 200 all-purpose yards without turning the ball over.

Defensively, the Lions held Miles offense in check only giving up 264 yards of total offense and 13 first downs.

“Defense basically pitched a shutout for 59:50 seconds,” Coach Wallace said.

Miles lone score came on the first play from scrimmage when the Golden Bears quarterback David Thomas hit Lonnie Outlaw on a 75-yard pass play.

“They made a shift and we missed an assignment,” Wallace said.

Miles had a hard time moving the ball on the stingy Lions defense, and on the one big play UNA’s defense gave up Wallace said, “we didn’t coach them well enough.”

The one struggle the Lions did seem to have was in the kicking game.  Place kicker Michael Schuster was 0-3 on field goals attempts, missing from 30, 31 and 44 yards out.

“He missed a few kicks, he’s just gotta get it out of his head,” Wallace said. “I’ve seen Tigers Woods shoot a bad round before too.’”

Longtime rival and Division I foe Jacksonville State University is up next for the Lions.

“I don’t care what division they are, there is 11 guys out there, and we’re going to attack them the way we want to attack them,” Wallace said.

UNA is 1-0 to start the 2013 campaign, and will try to improve to 2-0 next Saturday at 6 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ala.
