Teams struggle in conference matches

Mirko Sommerfeld plays during the April 9 game against UA-Huntsville.

The UNA tennis teams hosted UA-Huntsville April 9 in their final home match of the season.

The women defeated the Chargers, while the men lost.

Before hosting UA-Huntsville, the UNA tennis teams travelled to Shorter April 7.

The women lost 7-2 to the Shorter women’s team who have won seven games in a row.

Natalia Barragan and Marcey Ann Sykes were the only members of the UNA women’s team to win a match.

Barragan won 6-2, 6-1 in her match, while Sykes won 6-4, 6-1 to avoid the overall sweep.

UNA’s best doubles team, Barragan and Mackenzie Bishop, lost for only the fourth time all season as Shorter swept the ladies in doubles.

They fared much better against Shorter.

Coach Brice Bishop has seen how much effort the men’s team has given this season without seeing many results.

“They’ve been playing well but not having the results,” Bishop said. “Today they got their results.”

The men’s team swept Shorter in doubles action. Rob Whitsitt and Alex Weber won at #3 doubles in the first doubles match of the day. Guillaume Dechoz/Alexey Kavalenka and Matt Feury/Mirko Sommerfield won their doubles matches to put the Lions up 3-0.

“I was really proud of the way the guys played,” he said.

Dechoz increased the lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to start off singles action. Shorter won the next three matches to close the gap to 4-3. UNA closed out the day with singles wins by Whitsitt and Sommerfeld.

“This was a great win over a quality team,” Bishop said. “I like how the guys are playing right now.”

The men’s team has been struggling this season, as their 4-9 record has them ranked toward the bottom of the GSC.

Both teams will play their last matches of the season against the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky., March 14.

The men lost 3-4 and the women lost 3-6 in an earlier matchup with Western Kentucky March 12 in Florence.
