Lions split weekend series on the road

Baseball

The Lions baseball team struggled in a weekend series against West Alabama April 6-7 in Livingston.

After splitting the April 6 doubleheader, the Lions fell 7-2 to the Tigers in the closing game April 7.

The April 7 loss gave the Lions a 20-16 overall record and 10-8 record in the Gulf South Conference.

In the April 7 game, Cade Medley pitched a solid seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He walked three and struckout nine.

In the bottom of the eighth, UNA relief pitcher Eric Wilson gave up a leadoff single, hit the next batter and then made a fielding error to load the bases with no outs.

UNA pitcher Ben Seabrook then came in, and gave up a two-run single to Josh Podoris that gave UWA a 3-2 lead. UNA got one out on a fielder’s choice and another run scored on an error to make it 4-2. Seabrook then gave up two more run-scoring singles as West Alabama pushed its lead to 7-2.

Wilson (2-2) took the loss for UNA, allowing three runs on one hit without recording an out. Seabrook was responsible for three runs on three hits in one inning pitched.

Softball

The softball team saw success April 6-7 with a sweep over Delta State April 6 and a split at Christian Brothers April 7.

The team won its April 6 games against DSU on the Statesmen’s home turf 10-9 and 8-7.

In the series at DSU, Breanna Riley pitched a complete game in the first game.

The Lions travelled to Christian Brothers April 7 and split a two-game series, wining the first 10-0 before falling to the Bucs 14-4 in the second game.

With the split, UNA holds a 33-11 overall record and a 16-8 record in the Gulf South Conference. The Lions fell to third place in conference standings behind Valdosta State.

In the first game, Riley and Haley Barnette pitched a shutout while the Lions scored 10 runs from 13 hits.

Dani Colwill and Callie Steadman each finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, with Colwill recording three RBIs.

Riley struck out six and gave up only three hits, improving to 15-4 on the season.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs scored 14 runs off 14 hits, giving them a 14-4 win over the Lions.

Offensively, UNA managed nine hits but stranded 10 base runners for the game. Ashley Bonner was 2-for-2, including a solo home run in the second inning. Shelby Goodman was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lions host two GSC games this weekend, hosting Shorter April 13 at 1 p.m. before West Georgia at 2 p.m. April 14.

The 2013 GSC Tournament will be held May 3-5 in Southaven, Miss.
