Lions struggle at first tournament appearance

The UNA golf team finished fifth of 15 at the Florida Southeastern Collegiate Tournament March. 12, coming in 33-over par.

“We struggled just a little bit, but it was our first tournament of the year, so we just had to get the nervous energy out,” said Stuart Clark head coach.

On the first day of the tournament, March 11, the team had two rounds of 294 and 303 and finished 21-over par.

In the second day, March 12, the Lions were tied in fourth place after four rounds before falling to fifth place with a finish of 300 in the final round.

Clark said the Lions had a longer off-season than some of their competition, and he is still proud of his players for their effort.

“To come in there and get a fifth for the way we played the first couple wins… we stacked up and beat everybody we needed to beat,” Clark said.

Freshman Michael Peter led UNA with rounds of 74, 76 and 72 for a 222 total and tied for 12th place individual.

“I was really proud of my freshman, Michael Peter,” Clark said. “He came in 12th, and that’s really big for a freshman.”

The team travels to Georgia College & State University for the Bobcat Intercollegiate March 18-19.
