Nationally-ranked Lions sweep Christian Brothers

The nationally-ranked UNA Lions softball team swept Christian Brothers University in a double header on Wednesday, March 20 at home.

In the first game, the Lions won 6-5 after a walk-off walk by Summer Wilkerson.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, when both teams scored two runs. The game remained tied until the fifth inning when the Buccaneers took the lead.

Haley Barnette relieved UNA starter Breanna Riley in the fifth inning after Riley gave up two more runs. Another run from Riley put the Buccaneers up 5-3.

The Lions bounced back in the bottom of the inning when catcher Mallory Patterson hit a three-run homer over the left center fence.

The game remained tied into an extra inning. The Lions loaded up the bases in the bottom of the eighth, when Wilkerson stepped up to the plate. She took the first two pitches to go 2-0 in the count. The third pitch was a called strike. She took the last two pitches for balls to work out a walk. The walk advanced the winning run across the plate.

In the second game, the Lions won 4-3.

It took three and a half innings for a run to score. The GSC player of the week, Callie Steadman hit a leadoff homer to start the bottom of the fourth. The second run came off of an RBI single from Nikki Hodges.

CBU scored their three runs in the top of the fifth to go up 3-2 heading into bottom the fifth inning. UNA would answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

That is all the Lions needed to get the second win of the day.

The Lions are now 23-9 on the season. UNA is ranked fourth in the GSC on the season and will play the three teams ahead of them this weekend in Florence. They will play UA-Huntsville, who is first in the GSC, on Saturday, March 23. The Lions will go on to play third ranked West Alabama on Sunday, March 24 and second-ranked Valdosta State on Friday, March 29.
