Baseball team defeats LeMoyne-Owen in season opener

The UNA Lions baseball team swept the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians in a double header on Wednesday Feb. 13 to start their season 2-0.

Scoring a combined total of 43 runs, the Lions finished the first game 29-2 and the second game 14-0.

Starting pitcher Daymon Eriksen quickly shut down LeMoyne-Owen in the first inning and went on to pitch the next two innings without allowing any runs on only one hit.

Riley Sanderson took over pitching in the fourth inning, pitching three scoreless innings before relief pitcher Brad Van Fechtman took over in the seventh and allowed two runs on three hits.

Senior outfielder Josh Doyle was the leadoff hitter for the Lions in the first game, immediately taking first base after being walked by LeMoyne-Owen’s starting pitcher Jonathan Clark.

Second baseman Bradley Noland drove Doyle home to score the first run after hitting a double to right field.

With the bases loaded at several points throughout the first inning, the Lions went on to score 15 runs and sent 14 batters to the plate before getting their first out. Their streak continued, with batters adding three runs in the second inning, two runs in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth and one run in the sixth.

Noland brought in four hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in, while Josh Cyr, Dylan Boston and Eric Wilson all scored four runs. Will Dennis, Andrew Almon, Matthew Tittle and Cyr all finished the first game with four RBIs.

Junior Eric Wilson came in as the starting pitcher for the second game, where he pitched four innings, striking out five players and giving up just one hit with one walk. Relief pitchers Drew Mobley, Morgan McCarley and Ben Seabrook followed, each pitching one scoreless inning apiece.

The Lions scored four runs during the first inning. They added one run each in the second, third and fourth innings, before adding two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth inning.

Noland again led the team, scoring four runs total and two RBIs.
