Senate discusses changes to grading policies

UNA Senate met Thursday, Jan. 31 and discussed unfinished business concerning grading practices in the faculty handbook.

Amendments made to the handbook are awaiting approval from SGA, but during last week’s meeting officials said there was confusion about the document as it was presented. SGA President Will Riley said he searched for clarification on certain words in the amendments after the meeting last week.

“Does reevaluate mean recompute or reconsider?” Riley said. “I was told they mean recomputed.”

Senators Tyree Fletcher and Mary-Francis Wilson voiced opinions against Riley’s clarification because they had newer versions of the document, which had been amended twice since the Jan. 24 meeting, said Wilson.

“We can pass it with revision,” Riley said. “We can pass it with our suggestions and what we think.”

After voting, the amendment did not pass in Senate.

Senate also discussed the code of laws for Freshman Forum. Senate members talked about amending the code to expand Freshman Forum from 30 to 40 positions to accommodate the growing freshman enrollment.

Susan Sharp, registrar, was present to discuss plans for an extended fall or Thanksgiving break.

Senate members said they have been trying to find a way to lengthen the breaks, but their proposal was turned down by faculty senate last year because of conflicts with evening classes.

“If you add two extra days to one of the breaks you have to be willing to give up two days somewhere else,” said Sharp.
