Senate discusses changes to Code of Laws

SGA Senate met on Jan. 17 and discussed and voted on Bill 13-01, which would change the code of laws for applying to be a member of Senate.

Some senators said they believed requiring 240 signatures to apply for Senate is too difficult and deters potential senators from applying for the position. They suggested the requirement for the number of signatures should be reduced or taken away completely.

Other senators opposed, and said they believe the signatures are important because they showcase a willingness to become a senator and allow students on campus to become familiar with potential senators.

“There are 7,500 students on this campus,” said Jordan Brasher, vice president of senate. “Of those 7,500, you represent 240 of those students by your seat in Senate, assuming that we have all 40 seats filled.”
