Lions look for first winning season in eight years

Freshman infielder Harlie Barkley participates in practice at the UNA softball field on Cox Creek Parkway in Florence Jan. 18.

The UNA softball team will start their season Feb. 7 at Stillman in Tuscaloosa.  The first game of the double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

A new coaching staff composed of Jason Anderson and Sage Woodham will lead the Lions this season. The duo brings a new attitude to the diamond.

“We are looking to turn the program around this year,” Woodham said. “We can do it with the people we have.”

The Lions are looking to advance to their first winning season in eight years. Last season, the Lions went 20-26 with an 8-21 conference record, placing them sixth in the GSC.

The Lions’ practices and meeting sessions have gone differently this season than in the past. The team has been more motivated and driven by Anderson’s attitude.

“We definitely work harder,” said Summer Wilkerson, returning shortstop. “(Anderson) is a lot more motivating and enthusiastic.”

Wilkerson is the only returning starter in the infield.

Returning players feel as if the team is going to be more successful than previous seasons. Anderson has never had a losing season and does not plan on having one this season.

“(Anderson) is way more driven,” said Dani Colwill, returning outfielder. “He has more enthusiasm in everything we do.”

Though only one infielder is returning, Anderson is still confident with his team.

Anderson said he feels that, with the players the he has compiled, the team is now capable of a winning season.

“When I took the job in July, everybody asked if this is rebuilding,” he said. “I did my research and knew there was some talent here.

“My goal is to not come in here and change up everything overnight but take the talent we have and provide a different mindset and an expectation of winning.”

Returning players include Haley Barnette, Ashley Bonner, Dani Colwill, Shelby Goodman, Katey Miller, Breana Riley, Callie Steadman and Summer Wilkerson.

The team members also feel they are closer to a winning season this year.

The Lions’ first home game is Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. against Miles College.

The team’s first conference game will be in Pensacola, Fla., March 2 against West Florida.
