Soccer splits first pair of home games

During the North Alabama women’s soccer team’s first official home game weekend, the team split their opening pair of home games on Friday and Sunday with a 3-0 win against Jacksonville State and a loss in the final seconds against Chattanooga.

The Lions play their first home game of the season against Chattanooga last Friday. The only goal of the game came after 89 minutes of scoreless action before Chattanooga’s Hollie Massey scored off a free kick with 18 seconds left in the competition.

Then they return to Bill Jones Athletic Complex and took on in-state rival JSU in a match in which the Lions never trailed.

Anna Bove’ scores her first goal of the season mid-way through the opening half at the10:11 point. Shelby Wall added her first goal of the game and second on the season soon after to insure that UNA had a well-placed lead going into the half.

Wall adds her second goal of the game at 74:37 in the game to give the Lions their final stamp on the game making the score 3-0. . Bove’ assisted on both of Wall’s goals to give her two assists on the season making her tied on the team with Kate Wiseman.

Wall’s goals move her into eighth all-time on the Lions’ scoring chart with her 24th and 25th goals of her career.

Goalkeeper Jordyn Spreck completes a shutout in her first full game as goalkeeper following an injury to Savannah Stewart in the matchup with Chattanooga.

UNA now sits at 2-2 on the season following their first home weekend of games. The Lions started their season against Ole Miss losing that game 0-2 before picking up their first win of the season against Southern Illinois 3-1 in which three Lions’ players score in the matchup.

They will play their next matchup at home against Tennessee Tech on Friday, Sept. 6.
