Athletics department to name new softball coach

The UNA Athletics department announced today via email that it will introduce a new head softball coach in a press conference tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Flowers Hall.

The email, sent to all campus employees, said that the press conference will be held in room 304 of Flowers Hall.

The department is not releasing the name of the new coach at this time, said Shane Hermann, assistant sports information director. He said the department interviewed five finalists for the position, and that the new coach “separated himself as a top candidate.”

Athletic Director Mark Linder decided in early May not to renew former coach Jeremy Reece’s contract, Hermann said.

“Every coach when they finish a season they have an end of the season meeting with the (Athletic Director), and it was decided at that meeting,” Hermann said.

After repeated attempts to contact Linder for comment, communication was not returned.

Reece’s 287 victories while at UNA are the most in the history of the softball program; however, his final overall record with the Lions is 287-292. Reece’s 2012 season concluded with record of 20-26, including a Gulf South Conference record of 8-21. The Lions’ last winning season was in 2008, according to roarlions.com, the UNA Athletics website.
