“You Know What The Vibe Is”: Summer 2019 Music Review

The summer of 2019 began on a high national expectation that the music coming out would remind millions of the vibes that kept summer 2016 strong. The summer of 2016 saw many musicians release some of their best work such as Drake’s album “Views” and plenty of singles throughout like “Panda” by Designer. Though the expectation was not met, the summer of 2019 still gave some moments that we certainly won’t forget.

Slightly before the official start date of summer, Megan Thee Stallion delivered her debut album “Fever” and kicked off the battle of the summer: Hot Girls vs. City Boyz. The battle drove social media throughout and gave strong showings from both sides with still an undecided winner. The battle that saw plenty of videos, stories, and more that drove social media gave an interesting twist to Summer 19’.

Moving forward, Drake jumped in on two of the smoothest collaborations of the summer. He started the summer by collabing with Chris Brown for No Guidance”, a song featured on Brown’s ninth album being the 32-song album “Indigo”.

Both Drizzy and CB captured our attention towards the end of the summer by dropping the GIF, clips, and memes worthy video for the song that showed off Drake’s ever-so impressive dance moves. Drake also collabed with Rick Ross for Money in The Grave”, a song that dropped soon after the NBA Finals, and Gold Roses” which will be featured on Ross’s highly anticipated upcoming album “Port of Miami 2.”

Nostalgia kicked in as the long awaited return of The Jonas Brothers gave fans something to think about when they released their album “Happiness Begins”. Yes, the group that shook up the landscape of music and Disney over 10 years ago gave the ladies plenty of reasons to find their old Jonas Brothers’ T-shirts and posters and have a throwback moment.

Daniel Caesar’s “Case Study 101”challenged our minds and gave us an interesting twist on the feels while Ed Sheeran’s “No.6 Collaborations Project”showed the diversity of style that Sheeran can bring to the table. Jaden Smith dropped “ERYS”and Nas returned with his album “The Lost Tapes II.”

And of course, this summer would not have been this summer without Lil Nas X. The man who stole the show after his country chart-topping song “Old Town Road”was “disqualified” as country by Billboard before teaming up with Billy Ray Cyrus for the first remix. Lil Nas X would follow that up with his second remix of “Old Town Road” by adding Young Thug and Mason Ramsey. Ramsey gave us some vibes to giddy up on and if you haven’t heard them by now, well i guess you have to giddy out the way.

Overall, this summer’s music gave us moments to enjoy at social events and lines to remember. Not too high or low but just right for the summer of 2019.
