Facebook to launch new e-mail system for users

A student sends a message through his Facebook account at Rivertown Coffee. Concerns about e-mail privacy affect many Facebook users at UNA.

Facebook will soon launch a new e-mail service system that will

allow users to have an e-mail account through the website. The new

service will include three new features, which are SMS, IM and

e-mail.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

The new e-mailing service will give users the opportunity to get an

@facebook.com e-mail address to follow up with their usernames as

well. The new Facebook mediums also allow users to have a

conversation with other users anytime and anywhere they

please.

“You decide how you want to talk to your friends: via SMS, chat,

email or messages. They will receive your message through whatever

medium or device is convenient for them, and you can both have a

conversation in real time,” said a Facebook announcement Nov.

15.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

Though the idea of Facebook getting a new e-mail service is a new

innovation for some students, many people aren’t thrilled with the

idea.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“I have enough e-mail accounts already and I feel that if I got

another it would be a waste of time,” said Ariel Davis, a UNA

junior. “Plus, I feel like this only good for people who check

their Facebook a lot. If you don’t really care to get on Facebook

then you are wasting your time getting an e-mail account through

them.”

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

UNA freshman Marla White is one of many students who has grown

comfortable with other popular e-mail services like Gmail, Yahoo or

UNA Portal.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“I have been using my Yahoo e-mail for a long time and I feel very

secure with it. I am also secure with using my Portal. I just feel

that Facebook is always finding a way to put themselves out there

more and this is one of them,” White said.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

Some UNA students believe that an @facebook.com e-mail address does

not look professional on a resume.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“I think the new Facebook e-mailing medium is a great idea and I

will probably even try it,” said UNA senior Eli Bonifacio. “I still

feel that it’s best to use a Gmail or Yahoo e-mail address when

applying for a job because it looks more professional.”

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

Another concern of the new Facebook e-mailing service is privacy.

With new social network technology, there are always pros and cons.

Many students are worried about their e-mail accounts being

protected at all times and not being hacked.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“I recently took my phone number off of my Facebook page and

someone texted me and told me they got my number off of my

profile,” White said.  “I logged onto my Facebook account and there

my number was on my profile after I had taken it off.  After that I

haven’t felt like Facebook is secure and that anyone could invade

your privacy on there.”

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

Besides the possible privacy issues associated with the new system,

there are other pros and cons to Facebook e-mail.

<p class="MsoNormal" style=

“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“The good thing about Facebook getting the e-mailing service is

that people will not have to go to multiple websites in order to

check their e-mail. The bad thing is that people are going to spend

much more time on Facebook and there is more to life than the

Internet. To me, this is just another way to get addicted to

Facebook,” said Lauren Davis, UNA junior.

<span style=

“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>

“I think the new emailing service is terrific,” said Bonifacio.

“It’s a good way to communicate with friends, especially if they

live in other countries. I rarely go to my Yahoo account and mostly

everyone uses Facebook.”
