Instead of being used for notes, pencils are dipped in a fountain on the first day of classes at the UNA.
The Lucky Dip is an event where UNA students dip their pencils into the Harrison Fountain on the first day of classes. Superstition and tradition say the dip brings luck to the academic semester.
It all started in 2013 when SOAR counselors decided to prank incoming UNA students. They said dipping a pencil into the fountain on the first day of class would bring luck to the entire semester. The counselors were amazed to see the number of students who actually showed up to dip their pencils.
Hearing about the commotion, UNA’s Student Government Association decided to make the dip an annual event. And so was born The Lucky Dip.
SGA senator Aaradhya Sharma shared his experience with the event, “As an international student, experiencing the UNA Lucky Dip for the first time was fun and a welcoming introduction to campus life. The energy around the fountain with music, donuts, and joyful stalls truly shows how UNA turns tradition into community.”
On Aug. 20, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., students will experience UNA’s 13th Lucky Dip. Pencils from different campus organizations, food, music, school pride and community can be expected.
The event is only the beginning of a long list of events in UNA’s Mane Month.
An annual tradition, the month of activities gives opportunities for student and community-focused organizations to help students settle into the academic cycle and connect with the campus and city around them.
