UNA graduates could have a significant jump in job opportunities with the U.S. Space Command being moved to Huntsville.
“I am thrilled to report that the U.S. Space Command headquarters will move to the beautiful locale of a place called Huntsville, Alabama,” President Trump said at a press conference.
The headquarters are being moved to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville from the Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado. Trump said that the move will result in over 30,000 jobs in the state of Alabama. The Huntsville-Madison County Chamber said that around 1,400 of those jobs will be within its community in a post on LinkedIn.
According to a release from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Space Command will play an important part in Trump’s planned “Golden Dome” missile defense system.
The relocation has been a process lasting more than four years, according to the chamber.
Redstone Arsenal was selected as a potential landing place for the headquarters in January 2021. Barbara Barret, the then-secretary of the Air Force, made the decision to recommend the location based on infrastructure capacity, community support and other factors.
“Huntsville compared favorably across more of these factors than any other community, providing a large, qualified workforce, quality schools, superior infrastructure capacity and low initial and recurring costs,” according to the Air Force’s environmental impact statement dated September 2022.
Other important offices that have been relocated to Redstone include the Army Aviation Command headquarters, the headquarters for the Army Space and Missile Defense Command and a large portion of the Missile Defense Agency. The FBI is also relocating many personnel and offices to Redstone as well.
