Cypress Moon Studios is located in Sheffield, Alabama and is the largest recording studio in the Shoals area.
Originally established in 1978 as both a studio space for the Swampers and as the second location for Muscle Shoals Sound, today it functions as a recording studio, as well as a space for film and music video production, concerts and special events.
Cypress Moon Studios presented “The Hobbit” from April 30 through May 3. It was directed by Lilly Holly, who has been acting in film and onstage for years.
“I have always been a huge fan of J.R. Tolkien, and his created world felt like the perfect mix of passion and challenge. The aesthetics, music and costuming are all in my alley,” said Holly.
Holly’s favorite part of directing the show was the team in on the action.
“I have an all-female creative team, and they are incredible at what they do. They came in wanting to understand my vision, and I really respect that,” said Holly.
Holly gave accolades to her team for “taking ownership” of their roles, “bringing the show to life in such a beautiful way” and being a “dream to work with.”
Written by J.R Tolkien, “The Hobbit” is a profound tale of bravery, heroism and friendship, set in middle earth. Kolby Triplett played the main role of Bilbo Baggins, a mythical creature that Tolkien coined the “hobbit.” Baggins partakes on a journey of slaying creatures of all magnitudes, along with the powerful wizard Gandalf and a gang of mischievous dwarves.
After getting to visit Cypress Moon and having the opportunity to watch the show myself, I can truly say, the atmosphere was amazing. The play was nestled in an intimate, black box theatre allowing for a truly immersive experience. There were multiple stand out moments from some notable characters. Gollum played by Brandon Blakely and Thorin Oakenshield played by Max Bevis both delivered show-stopping performances. From the Goblin encounters to sword fighting and the final showdown with the dragon, it truly was an exhilarating experience. As someone unfamiliar with “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, I can confidently say I had an unforgettable time. Tonya Holly, Lily Holly and Leah Pickering did an outstanding job producing and directing this show. It is an amazing watch for all ages.
