Students robbed at gunpoint

Florence police are following up on an armed robbery that allegedly occurred at approximately 10 p.m., Nov. 5, near the 700 block of Nellie Avenue, said Florence police Chief Ron Tyler.

Two males wearing white ski masks struck the victim, a male UNA student, with a handgun took $5 from his wallet and fled, Tyler said.

Despite early reports that the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m., the alleged robbery actually took place closer to to 10 p.m. The incident was reported to police by concerned hospital staff treating the victim for minor injuries at 1:05 a.m., approximately three hours after it occurred, Tyler said.

UNA officials sent out five Lion Alerts about the alleged robbery starting at 2 a.m. and ending at 2:51 a.m.

Tyler said the victim was not originally going to file a police report and that the circumstances surrounding the incident are a little suspicious, indicating the possibility that the alleged crime was not a random act.

“The victim did not want to file a report at all,” he said. “We’re going to follow up on this, but we can’t force him to press charges. We’re not 100 percent sure of anything at this point.”
