Florence municipal election nears

Candidates for the office of mayor in the city of Florence are gearing up for next week’s election day.

Signs and campaign materials have been littered throughout the city as four candidates compete for the top spot in the city.

Mickey Haddock, John Hargett, Rick Singleton and Billy Ray Simpson are all running for mayor after former Florence mayor Bobby Irons decided not to run for another term in office.

Haddock, the current Lauderdale County license commissioner, Singleton, the former Florence Police chief, Hargett, a local certified public accountant, and Simpson, a local religious leader will all be vying for votes as the polls open next Tuesday.

Polling places will open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Haddock, Singleton and Simpson all participated in the SGA-sponsored mayoral debate in April earlier this year. Hargett was a late-comer to the race, qualifying right before the deadline to qualify as a candidate.
