Unopposed Student Government Association treasurer candidate and sophomore accounting major Laura Giles said she believes being treasurer is more than just running the numbers.

“A lot of people think being treasurer is about doing the numbers and then you’re done, but there’s a lot more to it than that,” she said. “I want people to realize being treasurer isn’t just about money. As treasurer, I would also help out a lot with (public relations).”

Giles—who was named member of the year in freshman forum and currently serves as the SGA chief of staff—said it is the responsibility of all SGA members to promote the association and its events.

“There are about 100 people in SGA,” she said. “If they’re all talking, that’s a lot better than a poster. A lot of what we have to do is communicate by word of mouth.”

She said another important part of what she will do as treasurer is making sure students know how their money is being used.

“As treasurer, I would make sure everyone is spending their money wisely and that students know what their fees are going to,” she said. “A lot of students don’t know their activity fee goes directly SGA and (the University Program Council).”

Giles said she is looking forward to another year on SGA because of all the good experiences she has had.
