UNA women’s golf tied for tenth place at the Johnie Imes Invitational on Sept. 22. The tournament was held at the University of Missouri and the Lions finished 35-over-par.
The Lions were projected to finish in the top half of teams after the last round, but unfortunately the officials called an end to the Invitational because of lightning.
“It’s a bummer, especially when you go on tournaments that are a long ways away,” said Head Women’s Golf Coach Neil Self. “In the fall, every tournament is important to us, so I just certainly wish we could’ve played that last round.”
The Lions would finish the first round with a score of 302, and the second at 309.
Sophomore Sirichaya Chanpen finished at No. 10 with three-over-par and a total score of 147. Freshman Lisa Palmgren finished at No. 18 with four-over-par and a total score of 148.
Battling both a new, “difficult” course and some of the best players in the country, this tournament allowed the team to navigate high competition. Coach Self is confident this invitational made the team “stronger.”
To prepare for the Lady Red Wolves Classic at Arkansas State, the team will be working on lag putting and speed control.
Lag putting is a strategy to get the golf ball close to the hole, setting up an easy last shot.
Self is sure of his team’s ability to improve in these areas because they have the “ball striking talent” and the “driving talent” to become a “really good team.”
