Soccer picked up its seventh win of the season, edging Austin Peay 2-1 to complete a season sweep against the Governors on Oct. 12. The Lions now sit at 7-4-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Sophomore midfielder Gizelle El Assal got UNA onto the scoreboard 40 minutes into the game, converting a penalty kick into a 1-0 lead for the Lions. She has now scored in back-to-back games, totaling 46 minutes of playing time between the two matches.
Junior forward Alana Owens, who once played for Peay, scored the game-winner in the 57th minute with a strike into the top of the net. Owens led UNA with a career-high six-shots, including four on goal, as the Lions tallied 14 overall shots, including six on target. The Lions also tied its own season-high number of corner kicks, gaining seven total.
The match marked the Lions’ first-ever win at the home of the Governors in Clarksville, Tenn. This was also the second time in the season the Lions faced the Governors, and second overall win ever since the teams first faced each other in 2007.
At home on Oct. 2, UNA also defeated Peay 2-1.
Peay scored in the 86th minute to cut the deficit, but the Lion defense held the win. Winner of ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week for Sept. 22 graduate Madison Vukas made two saves in the full 90 minutes played.
The Lions return home Thursday, Oct. 16, to host Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. at the Cox Creek Sports Complex.
