The Department of Visual Arts and Design hosted “A Life of Soulful Pursuit” at Gallery 126 on Tombigbee Street on Jan. 31.
The downtown Florence gallery is hosting work of Catherine Goode Moeller from across her entire lifetime. The pieces on loan from family, friends and collectors will be on display from Jan. 26 through Feb. 27.
Just as the works span across decades, they also span over various mediums including graphite drawings, bronze sculptures and water color. One of the featured works was “Katrina,” a hollow clay statue that has recently been restored by student Lacey Gross.
Born in 1951, Moeller was a Florence native and UNA alumni. She did post-graduate studies at UNA, The University of Alabama in Huntsville and the University of Georgia.
While at the University of Georgia, she did an intensive in Italy, leading to many of her bronze works. In Florence, Moeller was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Tennessee Valley Art Association and the Watercolor Society of Alabama. She served her community as the coordinator of the Helen Keller Festival Arts and Crafts Show. She worked as a freelance artist with many pieces still publicly displayed in Florence, including in the UNA Mitchell Burford Science building.

Her husband, Dr. Michael B. Moeller has established the Catherine Goode Moeller Endowed Scholarship in his late wife’s honor.
Last February, the VAD department unveiled its biennial exhibit to show off the work of its faculty members.
The exhibit featured the research and artwork of several faculty members in the department and was displayed until March 6.
Many pieces in various media were displayed at the Elaine Bailey Augustine Art Gallery to inspire Art and Design students and connect students to their instructors.
