10-year challenge becomes today’s time capsule

As students scroll through their social media, they are sure to stumble across a collage of pictures with the caption “#10YearChallenge.”

The 10 year challenge is the latest internet frenzy movement. It involves a person posting a picture of themselves taken 10 years ago and placing it next to one that is taken in 2019, according to gqindia.com.

This challenge is also known as the “glow up” challenge and is supposed to show how much they have changed over the years.

“I think the ten year challenge is a fun reflection on how much you have evolved from then to now,” Said freshman Danielle Fuller. “I probably wouldn’t participate in it simply because I never do. Personally, I just like to observe.”

Freshman Abby Folsom said she thinks the challenge is not as fun and unique if everyone is doing it.

“It is almost inevitable for this type of challenge to become popular because mostly everyone can do it,” Folsom said. “I have thought about participating in it after seeing them all over Instagram because I am just more susceptible to peer pressure but am trying not to be. I didn’t participate in this trend because I am not a fan of the ‘hype.’”

Celebrities have even taken part in this challenge, showing off their immense change over the years. American television personality Caitlyn Jenner shares a picture of herself before and after her transition saying, “Now that is a #10YearChallenge. Be authentic to yourself.”

However, other celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Gabrielle Union and Ryan Seacrest seem to not have aged at all, instead they seem to be aging backwards. American comedian Ellen Degeneres posts her 10 year difference, where she looks exactly the same. She said, “I never realized how differently I hold my hand now.”

Celebrities are not the only ones participating, though. Dermatologist Shari Marchbein uses her platform to promote self-love and skin-care.

“I remember disliking my naturally full checks when I was younger, but I wish I had appreciated them,” Marchbein said on her Instagram post. “I feel more comfortable and confident in my skin now, than at any other time in my life and I think this is a part of maturing, being authentic and learning to really listen to your voice.”

The 10-year challenge has grown to be about more than just appearance. For some people, it has become a chance for them to reflect on their personal growth.

Maybe this is a modern day time capsule. People are looking into the past – reflecting on they use to be, admiring who they have become and wondering who they will be in the next 10 years.
