Liberal view: Complete social philosophy of conservatives is baffling

Socrates once said that “Only
the extremely ignorant … can resist change.” The fact that
homosexuals cannot marry is one of the darkest spots in American
culture. According to New World Dictionary: discrimination is
“unfair treatment of certain people based on circumstances out of
their control.”

And, contrary to what Rick
Warren and Glenn Beck tell you, being gay is not something a person
controls. When people think of discrimination, they think of the
race riots in the 1960’s, or women’s suffrage in 1920’s. Well I’m
here to tell you that not giving homosexuals the right to marry is
no different than the ignorant bigots putting dogs and fire hoses
on blacks during the race riots of the 60’s.

The fact a person can
actually think that a gay couple getting married will destroy the
idea of the “family” is simply preposterous. A child has never
“turned” gay because two men live together down the road. This
concept of “if homosexuals are allowed to marry the country will be
destroyed” is, once again, just a ploy by the ultra-right-wing
conservatives to put fear into American minds in order to achieve
what they want.

The complete social
philosophy of conservatives baffles me. They claim they want less
government interaction in our life. The scream and yell that they
want to live without the government telling us what we can and
can’t do. But, why doesn’t this philosophy apply to social issues
such as gay marriage? There is no greater government impediment
than the government telling Americans who they can and can’t love.

I have yet to hear an
argument that tells me why gay marriage is illegal. The ONLY
reason I have heard is “It says it in the Bible.” I disagree, but
my point is that we have a first amendment right of freedom of
religion and the only thing telling us gay marriage is wrong is
simply religion. If we go by that philosophy, adultery and cursing
should be illegal. So how can we have true freedom of religion and
still use the “laws” of religion to form our laws in this
country?
<p style=

This country was founded by
people with differences, the idea that no matter how different you
are, you have the same opportunity as everyone else and can do
anything within the law that you wish. However, when that law
blatantly discriminates against people, something has to be done,
the law must change. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you
want to see in the world.”

I believe this is what
Americans must to, we must stop discriminating, change this
horrible, unjust law. That will truly make this the greatest
country in the world.
