Just a few months into the semester and I am already missing

Momma’s cooking.

As much as I would give to drive an hour back home for lunch each

afternoon and eat at the table with family, driving to Huntsville

Road just seems a lot better than the city of Huntsville.

Staggs Grocery use to be a grocery store long ago, known for

serving deli sandwiches and cheeseburgers to local mill

workers.

When large grocery chains moved to the area, Staggs was given a

choice: close down or become a restaurant. Maintaining their name,

Staggs Grocery put the groceries away and brought out the flat

grill.

Before I go telling how amazing my lunch was, I need to say one

thing … I went for lunch.

I have heard that the breakfast is top notch and the best you will

ever eat. This might be true, but I am in college and I can’t even

get up for McDonalds breakfast, much less Staggs.

Staggs has a unique seating arrangement of picnic tables and

chairs, which made me feel relaxed while eating. This, in my case,

was a good thing because I had another thing coming.

I walked up to the grill and told one of the women what I wanted. I

was going to try the old-fashioned cheeseburger and she hollered

back over the noise and machines they cooked with, “I’ll bring it

to ya!”

Finding my seat and waiting for my food gave me a chance to realize

any place that serves root beer and Nehi in a bottle might just be

my second home.

Not too long after my discovery, the woman brought my food to me as

promised, and there sat my cheeseburger on a plastic plate with

fries on the side.

It didn’t sit long before that cheeseburger was gone. It was juicy

with just the right amount of grease.

After those two minutes were up, I started on my fries, which

weren’t half bad. They were good enough for me to eat every last

one of them.

I walked up to the cashier and told him what I ordered and he rang

it up. Ah, the honor system. You just don’t get that now-a-days.

Gas stations won’t even trust you, but Staggs will.

It was under 10 bucks and worth every penny.

After this lunch I had to call Momma up and tell her I won’t be

home for a while, but to keep sending money.

Staggs Grocery has the best cheeseburger I have ever had and this

is why I give them the whole five stars.
