Millions have been celebrating October as national breast cancer awareness month since 1985.

Organizations on campus celebrate the month by setting up events around the university.

Zeta Tau Alpha will be hosting “Pink Week,” Oct. 1 until Oct. 5. Every day, they will have a table set up at the Memorial Amphitheater between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

ZTA will be selling t-shirts and cups to raise funds for breast cancer research. ZTA will host penny wars, a change drive fundraiser. Participants can put change in their team’s bucket to earn points. If another person put dollar bills on a team’s bucket, the team will lose points. The team with the most points will win the penny wars.

The winner of their annual penny wars will earn $100 toward their philanthropy.

ZTA will have pink lemonade and cotton candy at the Amphitheater Oct. 5.

Saturday, Oct. 6, they will have a guest speaker. Finalist for “America’s Best Nurse,” Sandy Cross, will speak at their Pink Brunch Benefit. The event will be held at the Mane Room. Students could reserve their seat with a $25 donation to Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Women’s Center will hold events Oct. 22 and 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will set up a white breast cancer honor tree in the Gulliot University Center Atrium.

“[We] invite people to hang pink ribbons on it on which they have written the names of people they know who have breast cancer, who are survivors of breast cancer and those they have lost to breast cancer,” said Emily Horn Kelley, Women’s Center coordinator.

Students looking to get involved with this event can volunteer to work the tables during these days, or just show up to hang a ribbon to show support.

Alpha Kappa Alpha will hold an event in the GUC Atrium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will have pamphlets with information about breast cancer and a table where students can paint and decorate bras to show support for breast cancer patients.

AKA will begin a balloon walk, an event where they hand out pink balloons, walk around campus and release them at the fountain to honor those who have lost their lives battling breast cancer. This event will begin at 4 p.m.

President Kayla Jones said they will conclude the walk with a speaker to educate and talk more about breast cancer.
